Information on UV Brooklyn High School Scholarship

UNA VOCE BROOKLYN
Catholic High School Student
$1,000 TUITION SCHOLARSHIP
Information Form

Information on Una Voce:
Una Voce is an organization of lay Catholics originally founded in Europe in 1964 to promote the traditional Roman Rite (Latin) Mass. This is the Mass that was celebrated in the Church from about 500 A.D. until the late 1960’s, and during this period it was the primary liturgy of the Church. Last year, The Holy Father announced his support of this ancient liturgy, and he urged all the bishops of the Church to give Catholics greater access to it in his letter “Summorum Pontificum.” Una Voce Brooklyn is a local chapter of Una Voce America, and was founded in 2000. Our organization is pleased to announce this $1,000 tuition scholarship to high school students, in order to help them with their educational expenses.

For more information about the traditional Latin Mass and Una Voce, please see www.unavoce.org and www.uvbrooklyn.org.

Guidelines for the Scholarship:

A student interested in competing for the scholarship must:

  • Get the form on the reverse side of this sheet signed by a teacher or administrator;
  • Attend the traditional Latin Mass at St. Cecilia’s R. C. Church on Nov. 21, 2008;
  • Get the Una Voce Representative to sign the form indicating the student was present at the Mass;
  • Write a 250-300-word typed essay entitled “What I Found at the Traditional Latin Mass”;

Please submit the essay and signed forms to: Una Voce Brooklyn c/o Indira Sweeny, 70 Bay 35th Street, FL. 1, Brooklyn NY 11214 OR email as attachments to indirasweeny@hotmail.com by December 15th, 2008.

The essayist considered most discerning and earnest will receive the $1,000 Catholic High School Tuition Scholarship.

This scholarship is open to Catholics and non-Catholics alike, but please note
“Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion” (taken from Canon 844).

Traditional Latin Mass at St. Cecilia's Church, Greenpoint

In accord with the Motu Proprio “Summorum Pontificum,” issued by Pope Benedict XVI on July 07, 2007, a traditional Solemn Latin Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia’s Church. It will be the first time in more than forty years that Mass will be offered on the exquisite 120 year old High Altar.

The Traditional Latin Mass…called "the most beautiful thing this side of Heaven" by the English convert and Oratorian priest, Fr. Frederic Faber, remains virtually unchanged in any of its essentials for fifteen centuries and appeals to many Catholics - young and old - who find in this Mass the most fitting expression of Divine Worship.

You are invited to attend and participate in this historic and solemn Mass.
